If you are unfamiliar with the concept of The False 9’s La Murga Report, click here.
This past Wednesday, we had a first for Austin FC: a home match suffered a weather delay. Somewhere around 100 minutes after the match was supposed to kick off, it finally did. This reporter spent around six hours in the Verde Wall last night, much of which was spent scoreboard watching for results that could have resulted in Austin FC clinching their first playoff berth. It also featured an impromptu performance of the Austin FC Song of the Summer: Pepas.
In my youth, I worked at an office that had a Top 40 station playing throughout work hours. Unfortunately, that time overlapped with the release (and dominance) of this song:
This song quickly became the “Song of the Summer” and was played, I shit you not, 10 times a day, every day. It went from a song that I enjoyed to a song I tolerated, and despite how ruggedly 90s handsome Rob Thomas is, I could easily go the rest of my life without wanting to hear this song again.
“Pepas” is the song of the summer for Austin FC, a certified banger that pumps up the supporter’s section when it’s played, but last night it set a record for how often a song was played in a match (outside of post goal chants). This reporter is worried we are approaching a diminishing marginal utility situation like having a second order of Pizza Rolls, a Third VerdeDog, or a Fourth Electric Jellyfish: too much of a good thing that ultimately doesn’t excite us nearly as much as it once did. Pepas is great, I want to be excited for it, but that may mean we need to hear it one or two times fewer a match.

Random Thoughts:
A weather delayed match meant that the crowd needed more energy and focus, which is why we saw some favorites make so many appearances, even moreso due to the scoreline. This sadly wasn’t a match for “Is This Love?” despite the statistics showing the team’s success when that song is played.
What Songs Were Played When Austin Scored?
Song | Number of Goals |
Club de Cuervos | 1 |
Random Thoughts:
One of my favorite things is when it’s clear people who are new to the supporter’s section aren’t prepared for Cuervos, and as soon as the water hits they suddenly realize what the Verde Wall is about. It’s like a baptism.
What Songs Were Playing When Portland Scores:
Song | Number of Goals |
Pepas | 1 |
La Bamba | 1 |
Random Thoughts:
Pepas suffered its first opponent goal against on the season and La Bamba became the only song with a net 0 success percentage that has had goals scored while it’s played.

Final Thoughts:
As we enter the home stretch of the season, a few things to keep in mind:
1) Which song (not goal response related) will be played the most without a goal being scored against Austin FC while it’s being played? “El Equipo de la 512” seems to have a commanding lead on total number, but can it hang on to having a perfect shutout record?
2) Somehow “Dale Austin” has been played the most this season without any goals scored, will it continue to have a magical anti-scoring effect?
3) Will any of the songs at the bottom make it up to even? “Reloco” and “Wolff of Sixth St.” would have the best chance as they only need one goal to the good to achieve this
4) “Bella Ciao” and “Ole, Ole, Ola” are tied for most Austin FC goals with five, which combined account for more than 25% of all Austin FC goals scored at Q2 this season. They’re also in a close race for most goal scored (The Chaos award), with “Ole, Ole, Ola” up by one goal.
5) With the addition of Emiliano Rigoni, will we get any Cumbia themed songs?
We at the False Nine look forward to checking back in two weeks after we get to join you again at Q2.
