For the first time in a very long time, I am without a job. After being fired by Austin FC I’ve decided to take advantage and do something for me. I will be traveling to various MLS playoff games and providing insight into the cities and the matches. I only agreed to this because The False Nine promised not to edit any of my writing and allow me to bring the same energy and intensity I do to my press conferences. First up: Montreal vs. Atlanta United.
Morning: Arrival
I arrived in Montreal bright and early, catching a flight from Austin and getting a bus from the airport. The ride was uneventful, with nothing but the sound of the engine and a few quiet passengers. Once I got to the city, I found myself in the busy downtown area, where I wandered aimlessly for a while, trying to decide where to go.
Late Morning: Breakfast
I stumbled upon a nondescript café. I ordered a plain bagel with cream cheese and a cup of black coffee. The bagel was unremarkable, and I spent my time watching the other customers, who were equally disinterested in their meals.
Midday: Strolling
After breakfast, I decided to walk around. I headed to the Old Port, where I slowly strolled along the waterfront. The view of the river was nice enough, but I found it hard to muster any excitement. I paused briefly to look at a few boats before continuing my meandering. I noticed some tourists taking photos, but I didn’t feel inclined to join in.
Afternoon: Museum Visit
Next, I headed to the RedPath museum, where I paid the admission fee and wandered through the exhibits. I took my time reading every label, but the art didn’t resonate with me. I spent an hour looking at paintings and artifacts, feeling increasingly indifferent. By the end, I was ready to leave but felt I should at least look at the gift shop. I didn’t buy anything.
Late Afternoon: Snack Time
I found a nearby bakery and opted for a plain croissant and a bottle of water. I sat on a bench outside and watched pedestrians walk by, occasionally glancing at my phone for no particular reason. After finishing my snack, I felt no urge to explore further.
Evening: Montreal vs. Atlanta United
Because my son Tyler plays for Atlanta I decided to root for them. He was also kind enough to make sure I had a good seat to watch and Owen Venmoed me $20 to “try and enjoy yourself.” I got a bottle of water and a bag of popcorn, which unfortunately had more flavor than I normally liked.
The match ended 2-2 and Atlanta won on penalties 5-4.
